I seem to be the one falling behind. I'm trying to play catch up, but it doesn't seem to be working. In the meantime, does anyone have any good insight or observations?

  1. I don't know about any good insight or observations but the Balaam story really puzzled me.

When I first read through it I thought that Balaam was on God's side and I thought it strange that God was so angry with him. So I did some research and discovered that Balaam was NOT a good guy. Which explains why Balak wanted to pay Balaam large sums of money to curse the Isrealites. (See 2 Peter 2:15) And even though Balaam was calling on God he wasn't necessarily calling on our God. But that is who showed up & said "don't curse them for they have been blessed" (22:12) So he sends the officials away but when Balaak sends a larger number to deliever his message Balaam says "I already told you I don't do anything against the will of the Lord. But stay 1 more night & I will see if the Lord has anything else to say." (21:18,19) He said that because of what Balaak promised he would pay him. God let him go but then made fun of him when he had his donkey talk to him. Then Balaam had no choice but to deliever blessings instead of curses. An interesting thing to me about all this is that God used this man, whose intentions weren't pure, to accomplish something He wanted done. And not just that, He went with the man and met him where he was. (23:3 & 16)

Now on a totally different theme. Did you notice in today's reading that God likes an alcoholic drink or some wine every once in a while? (28:7 & 14)
