I am not a big fan of Job. I don't like all the suffering and I have just an over all confusion about the whole book. Lisa, your comment about Satan patrolling the earth and watching everything that's going on may be the reason this book disturbs me so. I don't like the thought of Satan being so close. But, he is and we can't every forget that.

Job's friends might have done the right thing the first seven days, but now they've opened their mouths!

  1. This book is disturbing to me also because it very clearly shows that God allowed this to happen to Job. I DON'T like that thought - and the thoughts that go with it - ie WHY? What is the purpose? I thought God loved Job. and on and on. But then in a totally different reading this morning I came across 1 Peter 2 18- 22. Now tell me if you think I'm off base but I think that at least in part, this may answer Why. In Job 1:10 Satan says that if you "take away everything he has, he will curse you to your face" 1 Peter 2:20 it says that when you suffer for doing good and you endure it that is commendable before God & to this we were called because of Christ. And it goes on to describe Christ's suffereing as our example. I've always read this scripture when I felt someone else had treated me unfairly. But when I put this with Job's situation it seems that it fits with that too and atleast in some ways confirms why God let it happen. God would have known that Job could handle whatever Satan did to him so he let him be tested to prove it. I know that Job goes on to do some soul searching to figure out what all of this means and that we should examine our trials to see what the lesson or discipline is for us but maybe sometimes it is as simple (or complex) as being the one that God trust enough to let Satan test you. And sometimes its about trusting that God would never allow something to happen that had no value or contribution to our future even when we don't understand it.

  2. Just leave me alone and let me whine for a while! I can identify with that. This book baffles top scholars so I don't struggle too much about the "whys," but I sure can identify with Job at times. I have a few of his friends, too. In fact, yesterday's reading made me think about Pat Robertson.

This book really upset PawPaw, he just refused to even talk about it. It sometimes helps me to accept my humanity and reminds me of the great mystery of God.
